Event Series

FOLCS’ Event Series stand at the intersection of culture, current affairs, and the arts. They encourage discussion about the way these matters influence society and the artistic imagination. We aim to bring people into a thoughtful setting where the big ideas of the day come to life, through several different formats.

Our Conversations feature intellectuals, artists, government leaders, writers, activists, and other public figures in dialogue over timely cultural and political issues.

We offer a variety of film-related events. Our Film Series uses film as a powerful and expressive way to explore current events and the cultural climate. Conversations on Essential Cinema: A Film Club looks back on classic films and breaks them down in conversation with special guests. And our beloved annual International Short Film Competition showcases the work of aspiring filmmakers from around the world.

With a more narrow focus on law, Trials & Error provides intimate conversations on important trials that have captured the public’s attention. Our annual program Law of the Land reviews the Supreme Court’s major rulings of the past year. Theater of Law features a dramatic reading of an ancient Greek tragedy, the murder trial of Orestes in Aeschylus’ Eumenides. The play presents the first trial by jury in Western culture. It is performed by a rotating cast of stellar actors. and is followed by a Conversation with the audience. We discuss the origins of justice, the end of blood vengeance, and the adoption of the rule of law.
