Trials & Error

The Casey Anthony Trial

May 31, 2012

Nationwide coverage of courtroom cases provides virtually nonstop viewing of legal trials that effectively function as the most real of reality TV shows. The Trials & Error series began with one such gripping case: the capital murder trial of 22-year-old single mother Casey Anthony, who was accused of killing her two-year-old daughter, Caylee. More people tuned into the coverage of the Anthony trial than that of O.J. Simpson 15 years earlier, and the verdict was equally shocking to much of the public. Prosecutor Jeff Ashton (who was elected State Attorney for Orange and Osceola County months after the Trials & Error discussion) joined J. Cheney Mason (one of Casey Anthony’s attorneys), along with Judge Alex Ferrer (from the Judge Alex television show, who also covered the trial for Fox News) on a panel that discussed the evidence, the verdict, the media, and its cumulative effect on our culture.
